Heated arguments broke out between India and Pakistan, with the controversial Kashmir issue taking center stage at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accused India of not fulfilling its promises to implement UN Security Council resolutions related to the region.

In his speech, Sharif stated: “Like the people of Palestine, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have fought for their freedom and right to self-determination for a century. Instead of moving towards peace, India has reneged on its commitments.”

He demanded reversal of the abrogation of Article 370 and initiation of dialogue for a peaceful solution.

India responded strongly through Bhavika Mangalanandan, First Secretary of India’s Permanent Mission to the UN. “This meeting unfortunately witnessed a travesty this morning. “A country led by the military, with a global reputation for terrorism, narcotics trafficking and cross-border crime, has had the audacity to attack the world’s largest democracy,” she said.

Accusing Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, Mangalanandan said: “It has attacked our parliament, our financial capital, Mumbai, marketplaces and pilgrimage routes. The list is long.”

Sharif further accused India of deploying 900,000 troops to terrorize Kashmiris, citing “draconian measures” and a “settler-colonial project” aimed at transforming the region’s demographics. He insisted, “It will fail by the grace of God.”

In a strong response, Mangalanandan emphasizes: “If such a country talks about violence anywhere, it is hypocrisy at its worst.” Pointing to Pakistan’s historic support for terrorism, she stated that “cross-border terrorism against India will inevitably have consequences.”

While Sharif called for a ‘strategic restraint regime’, India firmly rejected any idea of compromise with terrorism. Mangalanandan claimed, “The real truth is that Pakistan covets our territory,” and labeled Pakistan’s claims as “baseless and misleading.”
