Tony Humby charged with two sexual offenses while in custody at HMP

A man accused of a decades-long string of sex crimes against young people now faces two new charges related to his time in custody awaiting trial.

Tony Humby is facing two new charges of sexual assault, according to court documents obtained by CBC News.

The first alleged crime occurred on November 10, 2023; the second over a month later, on Christmas Eve. Both took place while he was a prisoner in Her Majesty’s prison.

Humby has been in custody since his arrest on charges of juvenile sexual abuse in early April 2023.

In total, Humby faces 72 charges as a result of the sweeping police investigation that led to his arrest, with the first charges dating back to 2004.

He has pleaded not guilty to 33 charges related to 10 alleged victims and will stand trial in March.

Last week, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary laid another 39 charges against Humby.

These include luring a child using a computer, sexual exploitation and making and possessing child pornography.

That tranche of new charges relates to nine previous complainants and one new complainant.

Humby is due to appear in provincial court in St. John’s on October 17 on these 39 charges, and the two from his time at HMP.

He remains in custody pending his trial next year.
