Kamala Harris fails to address border crisis before election

With the 2024 elections looming, Vice President Kamala Harris has opted to finally visit the US-Mexico border – a trip that critics say is long overdue and motivated purely by political opportunism. Despite the escalating crisis, Harris has been conspicuously absent from the southern border for almost four years. Her unwillingness to take action has allowed millions of people to enter the United States unchecked, many of them without proper vetting. With just weeks to go before the election, Harris’ border visit looks more like a political stunt than a genuine attempt to address one of the country’s most pressing problems.

Harris’ failure to secure the border has resulted in a wave of criminal activity and an unprecedented wave of illegal drugs, especially fentanyl, flooding the United States. This neglect has led to what many are now calling a national security crisis. Although she tries to portray herself as a concerned leader, her actions (or lack thereof) over the past four years tell a different story.

During her tenure as vice president, Kamala Harris has largely avoided addressing the worsening situation at the southern border. When Harris was asked in 2021 why she hadn’t visited the border, she infamously laughed and dismissed the question by joking that she hadn’t visited Europe either. This cavalier attitude towards the growing crisis was not only an insult to Americans concerned about national security, but also revealed its indifference to the situation. For many, Harris’ avoidance of the issue meant she was unwilling to confront one of the Biden administration’s key challenges: the uncontrolled flow of migrants at the southern border.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reported more than 10 million encounters with migrants under the Biden-Harris administration. Even more worrying is the number of “escape migrants” who have crossed the border without being spotted by border police. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands, if not more, have successfully evaded detection, and their whereabouts are unknown. This raises major concerns about who has entered the country, especially given the increase in violent crime and gang activity linked to illegal immigration.

Despite these alarming statistics, Harris has consistently downplayed the crisis, choosing to focus on what she calls the “root causes” of migration, such as poverty and violence in Central America. While addressing these issues is undoubtedly important, it does little to stem the immediate flow of illegal immigrants pouring into the United States. Her failure to take action has led to a national crisis, with every state now suffering the consequences of unregulated immigration.

One of the most devastating consequences of the border crisis is the surge of fentanyl entering the U.S. through Mexico. This powerful synthetic opioid is a major contributor to the drug overdose epidemic that claims the lives of thousands of Americans every year. Under Harris’ watch, the amount of fentanyl smuggled into the U.S. has reached historic levels, with deadly consequences for communities across the country.

Fentanyl’s devastating impact extends far beyond the borders. Every state, regardless of proximity to Mexico, has felt the effects of the drug crisis. Communities are experiencing rising rates of overdoses, with fentanyl poisoning becoming the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50. Harris’ failure to secure the border has allowed this dangerous substance to flow unchecked into the country, turning the drug epidemic into a nationwide crisis.

Harris’ sudden interest in the border crisis comes as polls show immigration is now a top priority for voters. According to recent data, former President Donald Trump has a 10-point lead over Harris on immigration, with more than half of Americans supporting his plan for mass deportations. The contrast between Harris’ passivity and Trump’s aggressive approach to border security has made immigration a major issue in the upcoming elections.

Trump built about 450 miles of border wall during his presidency and instituted policies like “Remain in Mexico,” which required asylum seekers to wait outside the U.S. while their claims were processed. This policy significantly reduced illegal border crossings but was quickly reversed by the Biden-Harris administration. Harris’ opposition to these measures, along with her public statements in favor of decriminalizing illegal border crossings, has only reinforced the perception that she is weak on border security.

Her decision to visit the border just weeks before the election is seen by many as a transparent attempt to appeal to voters. This is the same vice president who once mocked Trump’s immigration policies as cruel and unnecessary. With public opinion turning against her, Harris is trying to rewrite her record in the hope that voters will forget the chaos her administration has created.

Throughout her political career, Kamala Harris has been an outspoken advocate for policies that many consider radical and damaging to national security. She has consistently supported sanctuary cities, where local law enforcement agencies are prohibited from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. She has also supported taxpayer-funded health care for illegal immigrants, including coverage for gender transition surgeries — positions that have alienated many voters concerned about the growing costs of illegal immigration.

As a senator, Harris opposed Trump’s request for additional funding for the Border Patrol, even leading a letter urging the Appropriations Committee to reject the proposal. She has compared Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to the Ku Klux Klan and claimed that images of Border Patrol agents enforcing the law “invoked slavery.” Such extreme rhetoric has only served to undermine the credibility of law enforcement agencies charged with securing the border and protecting American communities.

The consequences of Harris’s failed leadership on border security are being felt across the country. American families have been torn apart by violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants, while dangerous gangs have taken over housing complexes and terrorized neighborhoods. The influx of fentanyl has poisoned an entire generation, leaving many communities struggling to combat the epidemic.

Her continued advocacy for mass amnesties, taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants, and sanctuary city policies demonstrates her commitment to opening borders at the expense of national security. This approach has endangered America and further eroded confidence in its ability to lead on issues of critical importance.

As Kamala Harris tries to transform herself into a champion of border security, voters should remember the years of neglect and political opportunism that brought us to this crisis. Her sudden change of heart just weeks before the election is not a sign of leadership; it’s a desperate attempt to save a failing campaign. But the damage has already been done and the American people will not be easily fooled. We cannot trust Kamala Harris to secure the border.
