Risk of infiltration of football clubs by the mafia, says Melillo – General News

There is a risk of the mafia infiltrating Italian football clubs, national anti-mafia prosecutor Giovanni Melillo said after the ultra kingpins of AC Milan and Inter Milan were arrested in an anti-mafia investigation on Monday.


The investigation in Milan, the anti-mafia and anti-terror chief said, shows “the risks of infiltration creeping into professional and non-professional football by organized crime.”


Melillo said the research points to “risks of infiltration in football clubs,” as in other sectors.


“We have to stop pretending nothing is happening” about these risks, he said.


Milan prosecutor Marcello Viola explained that the clubs are “injured parties” and have put systems in place to prevent illegal activities.
