First Look at Peaky Blinders Movie Teases Fierce War for Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby as Filming Begins

NETFLIX has announced that production on the Peaky Blinders movie has officially started.

Oscar winner Cillian Murphy returns to the successful franchise and reprises the popular role of Tommy Shelby.

The global streamer has announced that the cast has started work on the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders film.

Bosses have revealed that the feature-length production will be an ‘epic continuation’ of the landmark gangster series.

Set again in the 1900s, the film follows the Shelby family as they navigate life on the lawless streets of Birmingham.

Series creator Steven Knight has written the screenplay and will executive produce the project with Patrick HollandGuy Heeley and Cillian himself.

Dune star Rebecca Ferguson and Academy Award nominee Tim Roth have joined the cast.

This was after it was announced last week that BAFTA winner Barry Keoghan had joined the project.

Further casting is yet to be announced and details will be revealed in due course.

Speaking about the upcoming film, Steven teased that the Shelby dynasty is ready for a brand new battle in the franchise.

He explained: “I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the film Peaky blinders story set during World War II.

“The country is at war, and of course that includes our Peaky Blinders.”

While director Tom Harper added: “There is a great sense of anticipation and excitement among our excellent cast and crew.

“We are grateful to the fans for bringing us to this point and believing this next chapter is going to produce something extraordinary.”

Photos from the set have emerged showing the crew busy at work as they shoot the first scenes.

Security was tight at the secret location in Liverpool, in what appears to be an abandoned industrial building.

Guide to the Peaky Blinders series

Series one (2013)

The series began in 1919 just after the end of World War I. Ambitious Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) leads the Peaky Blinders street gang. They attract the attention of Royal Irish Police Detective Chief Inspector Major Chester Campbell (Sam Neil). He was sent by Winston Churchill (Andy Nyman) from Belfast. He has been tasked with cracking down on the Irish Republicans and the Communist Party. It ended on “Black Star Day” at the Worcester Races when the gang tried to take over Billy Kimber’s betting sites.

Series two (2014)

The series begins in 1921 and culminates with a huge climax in May 1922 at Epsom Racecourse on Derby Day. The Peaky Blinders try to expand their criminal organization in the “South and North” of the city. This while maintaining their stronghold in their ‘heartland’ in Birmingham.

Series three (2016)

In 1924, Tommy and the gang want to expand their activities again, but this time they want to go international. Father John Hughes (Paddy Considine) is involved with an anti-communist organization, while Polly (Helen McCrory) enlists Ruben Oliver (Alexander Siddig) to paint her portrait.

Series Four (2017)

The fourth series begins on Christmas Eve 1925. The gang receives word that the leader of the New York mafia, Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody), wants to avenge the murder of his father committed in series three. At the end of the term, Tommy is elected MP in 1927 following the general strike of the previous year. This is after he used communist leader Jessie Eden for information.

Series five (2019)

The hit series became so popular that it was switched to BBC One. It’s the morning after Black Tuesday and the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and the Great Depression looms. Tommy faces new dangers when he is warned that a traitor is near him. However, his plan for fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) is put into action. Meanwhile, Ada Shelby (Sophie Rundle) begins a romance with Colonel Ben Younger (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who happens to be Tommy’s contact at British Intelligence. She quickly becomes pregnant with his baby before he is dramatically killed by a car bomb.

Series six (2022)

The show’s sixth and final series begins in 1933, just as the US is repealing Prohibition. Tommy faces even more danger as Mosley grows the British Union of Fascists after the Nazis seize power in Germany. However, events become complicated as he also has to deal with conspiracies by both the Irish mafia and the Anti-Treaty IRA.

Six series of the hit show were originally broadcast BBC One and BBC Two from 2013 to 2022.
