Dortmund’s UEFA Mafia banner denounces the new UCL competition format

Borussia Dortmund defeated two opponents in the Champions League on Tuesday as the players on the pitch destroyed Celtic 7-1 and the fans in the stands jeered UEFA with a strong message.

Before the match, Dortmund fans made their voices heard with a huge tifo and banner denouncing the new Champions League format used this season.

UEFA expanded the competition from 32 teams to 36 and scrapped the six-match group stage and replaced it with a league table. Each club will now play eight matches in the initial phase.

Tuesday was Dortmund’s first home game since the new format. A large banner reading ‘UEFA Mafia’ argued that the federation only cares about money during the Champions League anthem. Fans also booed the national anthem.

“You don’t care about the sport – all you care about is money!”

A brutal message to those responsible.

Tuesday and Wednesday are matchday 2 of 8 and fans are still unsure about the new format. With more games, it’s hard to say how each team is performing.

Teams finishing in points 1 to 8 will automatically receive a ticket to the Round of 16, while places 9-24 will compete in a play-off to reach the last 16.

It’s too early to say how a team should respond to the week two result, with so many games to go. It was not easy to adapt to this new format from the previous group stage.

Dortmund are ahead thanks to the 7-1 thrashing, with Karim Adeyemi scoring a hat-trick.
