Future (stylized as FUTURE) is the fifth studio album by American rapper Future. The album features production from Metro Boomin, Zaytoven, DJ Khaled, The Beat Bully, Southside, Avery Morae, in addition to production from other members of 808 Mafia, among others.

Future’s eponymous LP, the first of two chart-topping albums released back-to-back in consecutive weeks, is the extroverted, festive sibling to HNDRXX’s introverted contemplator. Here, the production is the star, adding tension and variety to Future’s reliable, trap-star flow. 808 Mafia’s Southside is at the top of the pack, with a hand in at least half of the album’s songs. One of its highlights is that “Good Dope” helps Future make the trap sound as addictive as any Migos song; “Zoom” bends sound waves on top of a twisted, hanging drum-sounding sample, and “POA” delivers a thrilling melody that sounds like a dulcimer leaned on. “Draco” shines with a spacey loop provided by DJ Spinz, while Zaytoven Future closes with two of the most confessional songs – perhaps a direct prelude to what can be found on HNDRXX – including “When I Was Broke”, a moving ode to his ride. or-die with tinkling piano and distorted dub. Album highlight “Mask Off” features a sample of Tommy Butler and Carlton Williams’ “Prison Song,” the flute melody that elevates Future’s rags-to-riches story with Metro Boomin’s effective production. Although Future’s typical predilection for sex, drugs and crime is still prevalent, the Future-inspired production certainly makes for an interesting listening experience. Together with HNDRXX, it becomes more of a fascinating look into the rapper’s psyche, showing multiple sides of Future’s personality and his struggle with his trap past and his self-imposed destiny to become a future Hendrix. ~~AllMusic review by Neil Z.
