Bwoglines: Whale Watching in NYC Edition

I was born and raised in New York, and I’m just now discovering this…

Happening in the world: Italian police arrested 19 people accused of links to the Ndrangheta mafia group, with possible charges including extortion, assault and other crimes. According to the investigation, the Ndrangheta have in recent years emerged as a powerful rival to the better-known Sicilian mafia, which is reportedly trying to take control of all lucrative business activities around Milan’s Giuseppe Meazza stadium. Happens in the US: Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance dodged a question about Trump’s loss in the 2020 election and downplayed the severity of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol during Tuesday’s vice presidential debate. “Did he lose the election?” Walz asked. Vance replied: “I’m focused on the future.” “That’s a damn non-answer,” Walz said. (NBC)

What’s Happening in NYC: Four humpback whales were spotted earlier this month, along with hundreds of bottlenose dolphins and a lone harbor seal just 10 miles off the coast of Brooklyn. The whales are currently feeding on fish in preparation for the long journey south, with some heading to the West Indies to breed. Whale watching tours depart almost every day from piers in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Long Island and along the New Jersey coast and last about 2.5 to 4.5 hours. (gothamist)

What’s happening in our community: “Elections 2024: what is at stake? Panel #1: Voting,” the first part of the Incite Institute’s three-part panel series, takes place today at the Interchurch Center from 2 to 3 p.m. Professors Robert S. Erikson and Donald P.
