“The UCI refused my accreditation and the Slovenian Federation offered no support” – Tadej Pogacar’s personal photographer reveals the World Cup disaster

Last weekend in Zurich, Tadej Pogacar created some memories that will last a lifetime. While the Slovenian attacked from 100 kilometres, claiming a first-ever Rainbow jersey and earning the praise of cycling fans and experts around the world, Pogacar’s personal photographer was not having much of a good time.

“Honestly, I am at a loss for words. Yesterday we witnessed greatness. It is incredible to win the Giro, the Tour, the World Championship and a monument in one season, and I am so proud and happy for Pogi because I know how much effort and the hard work he put in,” begins Alen Milavec’s post-Worlds review via Instagram. “Nobody sees this… they just see the results and judge based on that. The rainbow jersey was his main goal this season, and he achieved it with style. It takes exceptional cycling skills to attack the remaining 100 kilometers, and no one would even think about it. He did this in a race of this significance, but he believed in himself and surprised everyone.”

While Milavec was understandably delighted by his good friend Pogacar’s success on the roads of Switzerland last Sunday, his own World Cup experience is not necessarily something he will remember fondly. “From my perspective it was also one of the most difficult races I have ever done,” he begins. “The UCI refused my accreditation as a personal photographer, and the Slovenian National Federation offered no support or assistance, which I will never forget.”

“No one from that side expected me in Zurich, because they believed that without accreditation I could not get anything valuable,” concludes Milavec, explaining how it finally worked out. “But I went there with the Colnago team and we proved them wrong. Everything is possible, and if there is a will, there is a way, whether it is cycling, photography or life. Just believe!”
