Musicians target drug lords, while Mai Mabhena saves Guruve

Several musicians across Mashonaland Central Province have started their fight against drug cartels, describing them as more evil than any criminals on earth.

Speaking after a gala musical performance at the recently held Indaba Boss Birthday anti-drug and substance abuse pool tournament at Guruve’s famous entertainment/recreation centre, KwaMai Mabhena; Bigboy ‘Mr Muzarabani’ Motsi has claimed that their target against the drug scourge is the source of supply.

“We are launching a fight against drug lords who are in the habit of supplying these drugs and substances to youths in Mashonaland Central Province, especially in those areas where economic activities thrive on tobacco farming and mining,” Motsi said.

“It has come to our attention and observation that drug and substance abuse increases during the season when farmers sell their produce (tobacco). Youths are always in the mood during the time they return from tobacco auction,” Motsi added.

“We complement the government’s efforts in the fight against drug and substance abuse because when these boys get high, there is a lot of gender-based violence among other social ills,” Motsi said.

“Rehabilitation of victims of drug and substance abuse alone is not enough to combat the scourge. These drug cartels have become more evil than any form of crime on earth,” Motsi noted.

The leader of the U-Band, Moses Muputisi Chirambiwa, has also echoed the same sentiments by composing songs to amplify campaigns against drug and substance abuse, titled “Vekuru”.

Mvurwi-based Gospel outfit Chiedza Chedenga also denounced drugs at the gala.

Meanwhile, Guruve Hotel and Recreation Center owner Monica Chikanda, popularly known as Mai Mabhena, has spearheaded and sponsored the campaigns against drug and substance abuse through sports, and sponsored education and entertainment awareness.

“It is our job to ensure that whenever we have performances or shows at our facility, there is a need for moments where we can share the negative impact that drug and substance abuse has caused on the economic growth of our communities,” Chikanda said.

“We have helped several children in schools with school fees, uniforms and other basic necessities. We believe that there is a need to give back to the community through empowerment initiatives or by creating supportive platforms that transform the majority,” Chikanda added to it.

The Guruve Hotel and Recreation Center has become famous for organizing successful events, sponsoring community development activities and other socio-economic initiatives.
