TikTok applauds the destruction of the economy

The strike by port workers, also known as longshoremen, is dividing public opinion. But not on TikTok, where almost every viral video on the subject speaks with one voice and uncritically supports striking workers in the most extreme terms imaginable.

“Everyone should go on strike.”

“It is always solidarity with the workers. Frankly, it’s always the companies.”

“Pay your employees a living wage!”

“If workers decide this is the right time and place to strike, then this is the right time to strike. It really is that simple… there’s no doubt about it!’

These are just a few examples from countless viral TikToks, which, whether the speakers realize it or not, are essentially cheering the destruction of the American economy by corrupt and greedy union officials.

The first problem with TikTok’s blind support for the dockworkers’ strike is that it is, well, blind. No group of people, in any context or stage of life, is right 100% of the time or deserves full respect in all situations. The way so many TikTok influencers suggest that “labor,” in this case the International Longshoremen’s Association, must automatically be correct and right regardless of the actual facts of this situation, borders on cult-like.

Giving blind support to any group, including corporations, is the opposite of critical thinking. And in this case, the general reverence of influencers could not be less justified.

If the dockworkers strike continues, it will devastate the U.S. economy, leading to higher prices, shortages and layoffs in affected industries. It is estimated that the strike will cost the people approximately $4 billion per day!

For what exactly? The dock workers, who often earn high five or even six figures, stand out because their employers offered them a 50% pay increase over six years and a tripling of employer contributions to benefits. Somehow that wasn’t good enough for them. Yes, seriously.

Meanwhile, they demand a complete ban on technological improvements to port efficiency through automation. America’s ports are already remarkably inefficient compared to foreign competitors, and striking workers are demanding that they become even more so in the future.

It is no exaggeration to say that the dockworkers’ union leaders are enemies of human progress. They are holding the entire US economy hostage during the recovery from natural disaster to block innovation and force exorbitant wage increases. But millions of young people are being told to support these thugs, whose leaders are truly indistinguishable from mafia bosses, because ‘f*** companies’ and ‘always support workers’.

We urgently need to teach the next generation basic economics and critical thinking skills. Under the status quo, their view of the world is so thoroughly distorted by brain-dead TikTok influencers that they end up cheering on the destruction of the economy and somehow think they’re the good guys.
