Former JCF Deputy Commissioner Fitz Bailey appointed Deputy Police Commissioner in Turks and Caicos

Fitz Bailey, the former Deputy Commissioner of Police responsible for crime and security at the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), has been appointed as the new Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Turks and Caicos Islands. His appointment, approved by Governor Dileeni Selvaratnam, will take effect on Monday, October 7, 2024.

Bailey, who retired from the JCF last month after a distinguished 40-year career, will bring his extensive experience in dismantling major Jamaican gangs such as the Klansman, Kings Valley and Uchence Wilson gangs to his new role. His expertise is expected to play a crucial role in tackling the wave of violence in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

A record 34 murders were committed in the area in 2022, and with 32 murders already recorded in 2024, fears are growing that this year could surpass this grim milestone.

Bailey, 60, will arrive in Turks and Caicos on Sunday, October 6, and will work closely with Police Commissioner Edvin Martin, who is currently on leave. He is expected to serve an initial period of six weeks, with the possibility of a longer-term role.

In addition to his decades of service in law enforcement, Bailey holds a Master of Science in Psychology and Criminal Investigation from the University of Liverpool, a Master of Science in National Security and Strategies from the University of the West Indies, Mona, and an Associate Diploma in Accounting from the Management Institute of National Development. He has been awarded the Jamaican Order of Distinction in the Rank of Officer (OD).

Bailey’s appointment marks a significant step in tackling crime in the British Overseas Territory as local authorities try to stem rising violence.
