Reimagine and expand public safety

  • Led the City Council’s budget changes maintain and expand critical community safety measures such as funding 678 police officer positions, Crime Reduction Teams, graduating three academies, 911 dispatch and expanding community ambassadors to support small businesses in more Oakland neighborhoods through the FY ’24-25 Mid-cycle Budget.
  • Initiated investments of $2.85 million more violence prevention programs in the biennial budget for FY 23-25, including $600,000 targeting sex trafficking, an additional $10 million for traffic safety improvements and $1 million for community ambassadors in commercial corridors.
  • Enlarge the The budget of the Ministry of Violence Prevention in fiscal years 2021 – 2023, providing an additional $17 million for violence intervention, gender-based outreach and community healing in our neighborhoods and schools
  • Co-author of legislation that a non-police alternative crisis response program in the Fire Department (MACRO – Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland) to respond to mental health, non-violent 911 calls for service
  • Financed Community Ambassador Programs across the city, to expand community-led security solutions in business corridors and neighborhoods particularly affected by violence, including $1 million allocated in the biennial budget for FY 23-25 ​​and $1.5 million in the mid-cycle budget for fiscal year 24-25.
  • Targeted resources ending human trafficking and the commercial sexual exploitation of minors by focusing enforcement on exploiters, expanding services for victims and survivors, and improving street lighting and traffic calming measures in affected neighborhoods
  • Defended the rights of immigrants and refugees by passing several resolutions condemning deportations of rehabilitated members of the Southeast Asian refugee community and successfully advocating for clemency by Governor Gavin Newsom
  • Led a task force reimagining public safety in Oakland focused on improving public safety, reinvesting in critical human services, and supporting holistic well-being and safety
