Vivek Oberoi has also been added to the list of Bollywood celebrities who have expressed their views on the film Hema committee report. He denounced the exploitation of women in the film industry and emphasized women’s empowerment.

The Justice Hema Committee was formed by the Kerala government after the Women in Cinema Collective filed a petition following the 2017 sexual assault of the actress. The committee documented the challenges faced by women working in Malayalam cinema. The committee was headed by retired Kerala High Court judge K. Hema and also included veteran actress Sarada and retired Indian Administrative Service KB Valsala Kumari as members.

In an exclusive conversation with Zoom, he said it takes a lot of courage to stand up to the perpetrators.

Do you think the Hema committee report will finally expose the exploitative mafia in other industries?

Exploitation of any kind is a cancer on society. People with power should use it to gain power rather than exploit it. Artistic fraternities, like any other institution, must have checks and balances.

Have you worked tirelessly to eradicate gender inequality?

Personally, I have been dedicated to the cause of women and girls empowerment for fifteen years.

Isn’t it easy for the women to say something?

It takes a lot of courage for these victims to say something and we must take that into account. The fear of social stigma and career sabotage has kept the dark underbelly of many professions in check, and unfortunately the film industry has its skeletons as well.

Do you advise women to fearlessly make their voices heard?

It is imperative that we clean up this mess and make our work environment safe and comfortable for all women.
