Iran may have been involved in gunfire and explosions around Israeli embassies in Copenhagen and Stockholm, Swedish spies reveal as a 15-year-old boy was arrested over a ‘plot to kill Jews in Germany’ amid rising violence in the Middle East -East

Two separate incidents involving gunfire and explosions near the Israeli embassies in Copenhagen and Stockholm could involve Iran, Swedish spies claim.

The accusation comes after a 15-year-old boy was arrested in Germany for a ‘plot to kill Jews’.

Danish police arrested three Swedish nationals yesterday after two explosions, believed to be caused by hand grenades, occurred near the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen.

Police have detained two boys, aged 16 and 19, while the third has been released.

In a separate incident, the Israeli embassy in Stockholm was targeted by a gunman on Tuesday.

Following the incidents, the head of operations of the Swedish Secret Service – Sapo Agency – Fredrik Hallstrom made a damning claim during a press conference that Iran could be involved.

Mr. Hallstrom, speaking about Iran’s potential involvement, said that “there are a number of things that could point in that direction.”

He added: ‘Partly because of the choice of goals and modus operandi, but that is an assumption rather than pure knowledge.’

Swedish broadcaster SVT reported on Wednesday that it had received information that the two latest attacks on the embassy were ordered by the Swedish criminal network Foxtrot – on behalf of Iran.

In May, Sapo alleged that Iran was recruiting members of Swedish criminal gangs to commit “acts of violence” against Israeli and other interests in Sweden.

Iran has strongly denied these allegations.

Meanwhile, Der Spiegel has reported that a teenager from Wuppertal, in western Germany, remains in custody on suspicion of planning a terror attack.

The 15-year-old boy is believed to be an Islamist and is said to have had contact with people abroad who tried to incite him to attack with a knife – following the deadly mass stabbing in nearby Solingen in which three people were killed.

According to German police, the boy had exchanged information about potential targets, including festivals or Jewish people.

At the end of August, they received a tip about the teenager and the police and German counter-terrorism began investigating his case.

He was taken into custody as a precaution during a memorial service following the attack on Solingen on September 1. The boy was subsequently released.

Only after further discussions – including a video posted to TikTok showing the ISIS flag – did the local court order his arrest on September 20.

Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas in October 2023, several incidents have been reported apparently targeting Israeli interests in Sweden.

In February, police found a grenade on the grounds of the Israeli embassy compound, which the ambassador said was an attempted attack.

In May, gunshots were fired outside the Israeli embassy, prompting the country to step up security measures around Israeli interests and Jewish community institutions.

At the same time, experts warn that extremists are getting younger and younger – according to extremism researcher Peter Neumann of King’s College London.

Shocking statistics show that of the approximately sixty terror suspects arrested in Western Europe in the past eleven months before they could carry out an attack, more than 60 percent were between 13 and 19 years old.

Professor Neumann told Der Spiegel: ‘For almost all of them there was clear evidence that their radicalization took place mainly or even exclusively online.’

He has called this new phenomenon ‘TikTok jihadists’.
