Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning ‘Anora’ closes the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival

Sean Bakers Anorawhich won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year, will be the closing film of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, to be held in Mumbai from October 19 to 24, 2024.

The MAMI screening marks the South Asian premiere of the film.

Baker’s latest tells the story of Ani (Mikey Madison), a Brooklyn sex worker who becomes involved with the Russian mafia. Baker, who served as Head of Jury for the International Competitions section at MAMI in 2018, is known for his empathetic, groundbreaking films that explore marginalized identities, such as in Mandarine And The Florida Project.

Anu Rangachar, head of international programming at MAMI, said in a statement: “It is a fitting tribute to close the festival with one of MAMI’s most beloved alumni, Sean Baker’s winner of the Cannes Palme d’Or. Anora – a sharp critique of wealth, privilege and the American dream, brought to life by Mickey Madison’s stunning performance.”

This year’s MAMI edition will feature 110 films from more than 45 countries. by Pedro Almodovar The room next door, Jacques Audiards Emilia Perez and that of Coralie Fargeat The fabric are some of this year’s international selections.
