Mexican cartels smuggling drugs in food imports, $17.4 million meth seizure at US-Mexico border, largest in Port of Hidalgo history.

Authorities at the Mexico-Texas border have seized as much as $17.4 million worth of methamphetamine from a tractor-trailer carrying coconuts. This incident is part of a series of busts involving drug cartels attempting to smuggle narcotics through shipments of fresh produce from Mexico. During a routine inspection, Customs and Border Protection officers, thanks to their drug detection dogs, discovered 378 packages containing nearly 2,000 pounds of meth. The drugs were seized by CBP before Homeland Security agents launched a criminal investigation. This record-breaking seizure occurred on September 28 at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas, marking the largest meth bust ever at the Hidalgo Port of Entry. The widespread drug trafficking through food shipments underlines the ongoing struggle to combat this significant threat.
