Sparks city employee is sentenced in child petition case

City of Sparks Assistant Public Works Manager Matthew Dearborn faces up to five years in prison after agreeing to a plea deal in a minor case.

The 41-year-old Dearborn signed a plea agreement in late August on charges of attempted abuse or neglect of a child involving sexual exploitation, according to court documents.

He was arrested in early June on charges of soliciting a child for prostitution and attempted child molestation for sexual exploitation during a prostitution sting in Reno.

Court documents show that Dearborn allegedly contacted a detective through an online advertisement who posed as a 17-year-old girl and offered money in exchange for sex, then traveled to a Reno casino to meet the minor.

“Mr. Dearborn has submitted, and the city has accepted, his resignation as Assistant Public Works Manager for the City of Sparks,” a spokeswoman told RGJ via email Friday.

Dearborn will be sentenced on December 9, according to the Washoe County Prosecutor’s Office.
