British officers will be involved in the G7 crackdown on illegal gangs deploying crime-fighting teams to migrant hotspots.

At a three-day meeting in Italy, Yvette Cooper and her G7 counterparts agreed to set up a network of law enforcement officials based in countries considered migrant hotspots.

These ‘source countries’ include the countries where migrants come from in Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as ‘transit countries’, such as Italy, Austria and Albania, through which they travel to reach the members of the G7.

The measure hopes to tackle the migrant problem before they reach southern Europe or the English Channel by disrupting the small boat gangs’ supply chain.

The agreement between the G7 countries, including Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the US, Canada and Japan, also included commitments to negotiate more return agreements so that migrants can be deported once they reach the G7 countries.

The deal also aims to push social media companies to do more to remove advertising from crime gangs promoting their trafficking services.

The partner countries will share intelligence and expertise on the seizure and confiscation of money earned by gangs facilitating illicit smuggling.

UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: ‘Criminal smuggling gangs operating small boat crossings are undermining our border security and putting lives at risk.

“Our new government is quickly accelerating cooperation with other countries to crack down on these dangerous gangs.

“The recently agreed G7 Action Plan places a key focus on international law enforcement and reflects our determination to work with global partners on these shared challenges.

“New international joint investigation teams will help coordinate cross-border action and will complement the actions we have already taken to establish the UK Border Security Command and support it with new funding.
