New era | Hizb ut-Tahrir media coordinator Imtiaz in three-day pretrial detention

A court in Dhaka on Friday remanded banned militant group Hizb ut-Tahrir’s media coordinator Imtiaz Selim, 42, to three-day remand in a case filed with Shahbagh police station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza approved the order when Inspector Khairul Islam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit produced Imtiaz and requested seven days’ remand.

The CCTC unit of the DMP arrested him early Friday from Bashundhara residential area in the capital.

Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahabuddin Shaheen said a case was filed with the police station on September 13 under the Anti-Terrorism Act as he had gone to the High Court on that day challenging the obstruction of police had defied in front of the National Press Club.

“They marched to the Supreme Court demanding Khelafat and other slogans. The CTTC is now investigating the matter,” the OC added.

However, DMP spokesperson Muhammad Talebur Rahman said two cases were pending against him at Pallabi and Khilgaon police stations respectively.

He is facing trial in three other cases, the DMP official said.
