Britain has the most migrants in Europe as one in a hundred are illegal, research shows

Britain has the most illegal migrants than any other country in Europe, a new study has found.

Research led by experts at the University of Oxford has found that there are as many as 745,000 illegal migrants in Britain – accounting for one in 100 of the population.

Britain’s figures are comparable to the 300,000 illegal migrants in France and 700,000 in Germany, which has the second largest population of illegal migrants.

It comes after 973 migrants crossed the English Channel in 17 small boats on Saturday – the highest number to arrive in a single day in 2024.

A total of 26,612 migrants have crossed the Channel so far this year, a five percent increase on 2023 at the same stage.

However, the total is behind the current record of 33,611 in 2022.

The government is facing calls to crack down on the human smuggling gangs responsible for the crisis.

James Cleverly, the shadow home secretary, said: “We must stop people coming here illegally and eradicate them from our economy once they are here.”

Labor has promised to tackle people smuggling gangs by setting up a Border Security Command.

“Rather than soften the response, this new administration has increased returns of those living here illegally and created a new Border Security Command to ruthlessly pursue the criminal smuggling gangs who make millions from small boat crossings, undermining our border security and lives are at risk.” We are gaining traction after the chaos of the previous government’s approach,” a Home Office source told The Telegraph.

“The Tory leadership candidates are sticking with the Rwanda Partnership, which has spent £700 million to send four volunteers. Maybe it’s time for them to learn from their mistakes, instead of simply doubling their profits.”

The survey estimated the number of illegal migrants in Britain at between 594,000 and 745,000.

Denis Kierans, a senior researcher at the Compas Migration Center in Oxford, said it is crucial for policymakers to know the size because “these are people who live and work in Britain but who are outside the regular tax and operating the benefit system”.

“What that means is that the state misses out on their contributions to the public purse, while they end up on the margins of society, at risk of exploitation and poverty.”
