The Supreme Court denies R. Kelly’s appeal for child abuse conviction

The Supreme Court has rejected a request to hear an appeal by R. Kelly to overturn his convictions.

Kelly was sentenced in 2022 to 30 years in prison on nine counts for “sexual exploitation of children” and “transporting women and girls in interstate commerce to engage in illegal sexual activity,” as well as other charges.

Kelly was convicted in Chicago last year of three counts of child pornography and three counts of child enticement.

His attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court asking to overturn his conviction in Chicago, arguing that the statute of limitations should bar the charges.

“Defendant’s allegations were time-barred,” the petition reads. “Because Congress did not expressly state that the PROTECT Act should apply retroactively and even rejected a version of the bill that contained a retroactive provision, the PROTECT Act did not extend the statute of limitations and Defendant was convicted of time-barred offenses.”

Kelly will remain behind bars for a long time.
