Let him who has a wallet take it. The word for ‘purse’ here is the same as in Luke 10:4, see Note. See the note on Matthew 10:10 for more information about ‘scrip’. If the words had ended with “sword,” we could easily have deduced their literal meaning. They seemed to insist on wisdom in supplying want, instead of on a simple trust in God’s providence, as before, and therefore they would have approved of all just forms of ecclesiastical organization and donations. The mention of the ‘sword’, on the other hand, offers a new layer of cognition.

Our Lord’s statements to Peter (Matthew 26:52) indicate that they were not intended to be used in His defense. It is unlikely that He would teach them to use it themselves as they preached the kingdom gospel. Afterwards, true teachers understood that their weapons of war were not carnal (2 Corinthians 10:4). Below is a possible explanation. The Master was aware that two of the disciples (Peter and another) had brought swords, and with the acceptance of the thoughts of others that we have so often seen, He grieved, but with the gentle sympathy with which a man speaks to those who are children in age or character, conveyed His warnings in the form that met their fears and hopes. If they put their faith in swords, the day would come when they would desperately need them.

(He who has no sword must sell his garment and buy one.) Let him rather lie who has no purse or bag with which to buy a sword, etc. Of course, the statement was never intended to be taken literally. Our dear Lord used metaphorical language to ensure that His words would never be forgotten. It was to forewarn them of days of hatred and opposition when self-defense, instead of aggressiveness, might become a daily necessity. One of the catastrophic fallacies resulting from attributing inerrancy to erroneous inferences from superstitious epistolary worship is the conclusion that the latter is implicit.

Where there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
