K-Electric (KE), in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, has stepped up efforts to combat electricity theft in Karachi, especially against the notorious ‘kunda’ mafia. In the past three months, from July to September 2024, the power company launched 78 anti-kunda operations in the Lyari area, resulting in the removal of 7,400 illegal connections.

These illegal connections, which weighed a total of 9,100 kilograms, were responsible for the theft of 1.1 million units of electricity. As part of this action, two First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed and four cases were registered with the FIA. Kunda connections, which illegally bypass security protocols, pose significant risks to K-Electric’s infrastructure and public safety, making the removal of these connections critical to protecting the electrical grid.

Electricity theft remains a major challenge for Karachi, impacting the city’s power supply and network stability. According to K-Electric, electricity theft and unpaid bills are the two major factors affecting the loss profile of different areas in the city. To combat these problems, KE has worked hard to reduce power losses and provide a more reliable power supply. About 70 percent of K-Electric’s network is now exempt from loadshedding, an improvement directly related to reduced power losses in key areas. KE continues its efforts to improve supply in other regions through campaigns against electricity theft and by promoting timely bill payments. In Lyari, K-Electric has taken additional steps to address the problem, including targeted building inspections, increased engagement with community leaders and awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers of illegal kundas.

The company has also promoted the regularization of electricity connections and distributed pamphlets as part of its efforts to educate the public. Improved coordination with local representatives has resulted in faster complaint handling and more efficient removal of illegal connections. K-Electric urges residents, community leaders and local representatives to support these initiatives by discouraging electricity theft and promoting a culture of timely bill payments, which are essential to ensure a safe and uninterrupted power supply for all.
