By Zoila Palma González: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a strategy to combat drug cartel violence, but analysts warn it resembles the failed policies of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

According to the Associated Press, Sheinbaum emphasized increased intelligence and investigative efforts, but her focus remains on the “hugs, not bullets” approach that previously prioritized social programs over direct confrontations with cartels.

Security expert David Saucedo noted a “continuity in the militarization of public safety,” emphasizing the continued military operations of the National Guard rather than effective policing.

Despite a slight decline in homicide rates in 2023, the country’s homicide rate is still alarmingly high: about 24 per 100,000 residents, which is significantly higher than the U.S. rate.

Sheinbaum attributed the violence, especially in Guanajuato, to economic factors, but critics argue that drug trafficking dynamics are the real problem.

As infighting between the cartels escalates, including the recent murder of a mayor in Guerrero and cartel violence in Sinaloa, the effectiveness of Sheinbaum’s strategy remains questionable.

The National Guard’s primary focus on migrant enforcement further complicates efforts to effectively address organized crime.
