Kossuth man Robert Nytes indicted on federal child pornography charges

If convicted of producing child pornography, Nytes faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 35 years in prison.

MANITOWOC – Robert D. Nytes, 49, of Kossuth, has been indicted on federal child pornography charges because he must register as a sex offender.

According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Nytes is accused of using and employing a minor child “to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing a visual image.”

Nytes was previously convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a child in two separate cases in Sheboygan County Circuit Court; both cases were filed in 1995.

If convicted of producing child pornography, Nytes faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 35 years in prison, with an additional 10 years for conviction as a person required to register as a sex offender. He also could be fined up to $250,000 and will still be required to register as a sex offender under state and federal law, the news release said.

The case was filed as part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood uses federal, state, and local resources to locate, arrest, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, and to identify and rescue victims.

The case was investigated by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office. The case will be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel R. Humble.
