Delhi Police launches hunt for drug traffickers

A senior official of the Narcotics Control Bureau said synthetic drugs, including MDMA, are now becoming prevalent in the Delhi-NCR area. “Earlier, these drugs were not found in Delhi. Unfortunately, these are now being introduced to drug users by criminals,” he said.

The official further said that some areas in Delhi and nearby satellite towns are becoming a hotspot of both narcotic consumption and smuggling. “Dwarka and Greater Noida have become major hotspots for foreigners engaged in consumption and supply of contraband,” he said.

On Wednesday, a senior police officer in Delhi said they had busted another interstate supply network of charas (hashish) and smack (heroin) that was operating clandestinely in the capital. During the seizure, approximately 1,200 grams of hashish and 90 grams of heroin were seized. The accused hawker was a 63-year-old man named Ajay Lal, he said.

The interrogation of the suspect revealed that he purchased heroin from Mukesh and Monu (both arrested) and further used it to supply the narcotics in Delhi and NCR.

According to the officer, the suspect went to Dubai as a laborer and upon returning to Delhi, started doing private work. During this time, he started defrauding people under the guise of sending them abroad.

“He was even in Nepalese jail from 2005 to 2014 in a case related to cheating Nepalis. He then got involved in drug trafficking to make quick money and started supplying hashish and heroin in different parts of Delhi and NCR,” the officer added.

Since the discovery of drugs worth Rs 5,620 crore in the national capital, police have stepped up efforts and started conducting raids at multiple locations, while developing more intelligence about the drug network.
