Witness describes chaotic scene after deadly shooting in downtown Sacramento neighborhood

SACRAMENTO – One man was killed and another was injured in an early morning shooting in downtown Sacramento.

The shooting happened at the corner of O and 20th Street around 1:15 a.m.

CBS13 obtained footage from someone who witnessed the aftermath before police arrived on the scene and spoke with him.

“I saw people hiding behind buildings and I was curious. When I looked around, I saw the man lying on the ground, covered in blood,” said the man, who did not want to be named.

He filmed the chaotic scene moments after shots were fired near a popular Midtown bar on the corner of O and 20th Street.

“I kept hearing people around me saying he shot, he shot, he shot, and after a few minutes 30 police cars arrived,” he said.

According to Sacramento police, upon arrival officers found a man with at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A second man was shot and taken to hospital. His condition is stable.

“I could have easily been caught in the crossfire, I was close enough to catch a stray bullet,” he said. “I was surprised at how many people were in that area.”

Because the shooting happened just after 1 a.m., people were still on the streets on Friday night, even though bars don’t close until 2 a.m.

“With the warm summer nights, the alcohol involved and the many weapons in circulation, it is almost inevitable that crazy things will happen,” the man said.

He says he saw bystanders jumping into the water to save lives before emergency services arrived.

A memorial service was held on Saturday evening by people who knew the slain man.

Police said detectives from the homicide and crime scene units are taking over the investigation.

There are currently no suspects and the man’s identity has not yet been released.
