Hartford City man agrees to plead guilty to child abuse

HARTFORD CITY, Indiana — A Hartford City man arrested in May after an angry confrontation with Predator Catchers has agreed to plead guilty to child abuse.

Tyler Wyatt Selig, 26, has signed and negotiated a deal with Blackford County prosecutors that requires him to plead guilty to a Level 5 felony and then be sentenced to six years in prison.

Judge Brian Bade recently took the settlement under advisement and set the preliminary sentencing for September 23.

Selig was arrested outside a local convenience store on the evening of May 24. Hartford City police said he had come to the store expecting to meet a 14-year-old girl, but in reality he was communicating online with members of a local predator-hunting group posing as a minor.

A city official said he had resolved an “altercation” between Selig and the group, which was allegedly instigated by the Hartford man.

Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Selig’s charge of resisting the law is expected to be dismissed.

The officer said Selig resisted attempts to pull him away from the fight.

According to court documents, Selig, formerly of Fort Wayne, has been convicted of crimes including grand theft auto, carrying a firearm without a license, escape, forgery, fraud and theft.

Plea agreement: A Marion man accused of kidnapping his ex-wife from her Hartford City home has pleaded guilty to two of six related charges against him.

Shayne E. Dudley, 54, pleaded guilty in recent days to intimidation and domestic violence with a deadly weapon, both Level 5 felonies carrying a maximum sentence of six years in prison.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, which was considered by Blackford County District Court Judge Brian Bade, Dudley would be sentenced to six years in prison, followed by six years of probation.

The judge has provisionally set sentencing for August 12. If the plea agreement is accepted, four other charges against Dudley — criminal confinement, kidnapping, pointing a firearm and criminal damage — will be dropped.

According to Hartford City police, the ex-wife’s abduction occurred on September 25 of last year. Dudley allegedly forced her at gunpoint to go with him to his home in Marion and told the woman he planned to kill her.
